Understanding the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM and T2DM) is essential for recognising the distinct ways these conditions affect the body, their causes, and their treatments. While both forms of diabetes involve issues with insulin and blood sugar regulation, they differ significantly in their origins, development, and management.
T1DM is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This destruction leads to a complete lack of insulin production. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose (sugar) from the food we eat enter cells to be used for energy. Without insulin, glucose accumulates in the blood, leading to high blood sugar levels.
T1DM is usually diagnosed in children, adolescents, or young adults, although it can occur at any age. The exact cause of T1DM is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There is no way to prevent T1DM, and once diagnosed, it requires lifelong management with insulin therapy. Individuals with T1DM must regularly monitor their blood sugar levels, administer insulin through injections or an insulin pump, and follow a balanced diet and exercise regimen to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
T2DM, on the other hand, is primarily associated with insulin resistance, where the body’s cells do not respond effectively to insulin. As a result, the pancreas produces more insulin to compensate, but eventually, it cannot keep up with the increased demand, leading to high blood sugar levels. Unlike T1DM, T2DM is more commonly diagnosed in adults, particularly those over the age of 45, although it is increasingly being seen in younger populations due to rising obesity rates.
The development of T2DM is strongly linked to lifestyle factors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and obesity. Genetics also play a significant role, with a family history of diabetes increasing the risk. Unlike T1DM, T2DM can often be prevented or delayed through healthy lifestyle choices, such as maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
Management of T2DM typically begins with lifestyle modifications aimed at improving diet and increasing physical activity. These changes can help control blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. If lifestyle changes are not sufficient, oral medications or non-insulin injectable medications may be prescribed to help manage blood sugar levels. In some cases, insulin therapy may eventually be required.
Both T1DM and T2DM have serious long-term health implications if not properly managed. High blood sugar levels over time can lead to complications such as cardiovascular disease, nerve damage (neuropathy), kidney damage (nephropathy), eye damage (retinopathy), and an increased risk of infections. Regular monitoring and medical care are essential to managing both types of diabetes and preventing or delaying these complications.
